Medicare Open Enrollment: Kentucky’s December 7 Checklist |
Review your 2027 coverage and find free Kentucky SHIP counseling |

For older adults across Western and South-Central Kentucky, November is a good time to put a Medicare coverage review on the calendar.
Medicare open enrollment runs through December 7, 2026, with changes made during this period taking effect January 1, 2027.
This is the annual opportunity for people who already have Medicare to review their health and prescription drug coverage.
Depending on your current coverage, you may be able to change Medicare Advantage plans, change a separate drug plan, or switch between Original Medicare and Medicare Advantage.
The deadline deserves attention, but a rushed decision does not.
Start by gathering your current plan information, a list of prescriptions and dosages, the names of your doctors, and the pharmacies you use.
Write down what has worked well this year and what has been frustrating, whether that means confusing bills, difficulty getting an appointment, or questions about a prescription.
Use those notes to guide a comparison rather than letting the most appealing advertisement set your priorities.
Look beyond the monthly premium and ask about deductibles, copayments, prescription costs, and the rules that apply to the care you expect to need.
Ask whether your doctors and preferred hospitals participate in a plan you are considering and whether your medications are covered.
If you divide your time between Kentucky and another state, make travel and out-of-area care part of the conversation.
Keep a written record of the answers so you can compare options without relying on memory.
Before switching from Medicare Advantage to Original Medicare, ask about separate drug coverage and Medigap eligibility, because there are limits on when you can obtain Medicare Supplement Insurance.
A coverage change should follow a clear understanding of what comes next.
You do not have to sort through the choices alone.
Kentucky’s State Health Insurance Assistance Program, known as SHIP, provides counseling at no charge to Medicare beneficiaries, their families, and caregivers.
SHIP does not sell health insurance products and offers one-on-one help by telephone or in person.
Call 877-293-7447 and ask about Medicare counseling for your county.
When arranging help, ask what paperwork to have ready and whether a family member or trusted helper can join the conversation.
If someone assists you, keep your own priorities at the center of the discussion and make sure you understand any proposed change.
Set aside time now, write down your questions, and keep copies of any enrollment confirmation.
A little preparation in November can make the December deadline feel more manageable. |
